Indication of a schools capabilities Essay
The current eraââ¬â¢s education is known to be defined by students themselves, including their academic success, the value of educators and instructional quality in America, learning standards adopted by each individual state, anxiety, the role played by parents outside of a school setting, and much more. Most Americans believe that studentââ¬â¢s standardized test scores are the only legitimate indicator of a schoolââ¬â¢s efficiency. Since 1965, when the United States Elementary and Secondary Education Act became a law, standardized testing has been used to evaluate American public schools. The ultimate goal of standardized testing is to examine how well teachers are preparing students and to improve student achievement. Some people would argue that standardized testing accomplishes the goal of examining educators, allowing them to better their skills for the future, while others would argue that the idea of standardized testing damages the educational system altogether. The leading debate that concerns most, but is brushed off by many, is whether the success of standardized testing should be used to indicate a studentââ¬â¢s, teacher, and/or schoolââ¬â¢s capabilities. The key objective of the American educational system is for every student to graduate from high school, college and career ready. In 1959, when Everet Lindquist launched the _American College Test_ (ACT), it was ââ¬Å"designed as a test of studentââ¬â¢s general educational development and could be used with other criteria to predict student success at the college level.â⬠After the launching of this well-known assessment, testing was being put in use in many educational settings. In 1954, as a part of President Lyndon B. Johnsonââ¬â¢s, _â⬠WAR ON POVERTYâ⬠_ , the _Elementary and Secondary Education Act_à _(ESEA)_ was introduced. This act was reauthorized in 2001, which is now known as _No Child Left Behind_ _(NCLB)_ . This reauthorized act ââ¬Å"requires states to develop assessments in basic skills. States must give assessments to all students at select grade levels in order to receive federal school funding.â⬠Race to the Top was introduced by President Barack Obama in 2012, which is a school district competition across the United States. This initiative was put forth to raise standards, with the goal of college and career readiness. In addition, Race to the Top has lead states to develop ââ¬Å"rigorous standards and better assessmentsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"support teachers and school leaders to become more effectiveâ⬠, and provide intervention for low performing schools. (Whitehouse.gov) Now that Race to the Top has become worldwide, it has become a controversial topic. Civil Rights organizations have argued that ââ¬Å"federal funding should be based on need, not competition.â⬠As a result of the Race, teachers will be evaluated in relation to their students test scores. In a Huffington Post, updated in 2011, research professor and author Diane Ravitch stated that ââ¬Å"it will make the current standardized test of basic skills more important than ever, and even more time and resources will be devoted to raising scores on these tests.â⬠The new era of Race to the Top will cause the importance of standardized testing to increase, and the demand for privately managed charter schools to increase. In June of 2010, ââ¬Å"North Carolina adopted the Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts.â⬠Beginning in 2012-13, the course of study was implemented in public schools across the state. In conjunction with these standards, ââ¬Å"common examsâ⬠were put into effect. ââ¬Å"â⬠Common examsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Measures of student learningâ⬠refers to new assessments being developed to measure teacher effectiveness.â⬠A teacherââ¬â¢s effectiveness can reflect on how well a student performs on his or her exams. Since teachers are not told what is on exams or standardized tests such as this, they must prepare their students based on the standards put forth by the state and assume it will be the same material when testing. A common exam is ââ¬Å"given in classes where students are not given an end of grade or end of course testsâ⬠and is ââ¬Å"created by local educators and the North Carolinaà Department of Public Instruction to show the impact of teacher performance on student learning.â⬠The success of these standardized tests ââ¬Å"provides students with feedback on their knowledge and skillsâ⬠(Astro.Temple.edu). On the other hand, it ââ¬Å"motivates teachers to identify their areas of strength and weakness in teaching plans so that they can reconstruct themâ⬠(Astro.Temple.edu). This forms a relationship between teacher performance and student learning. On the other hand, many parents, students, as well as educators believe that standardized testing isnââ¬â¢t a great indication on a studentââ¬â¢s knowledge. Standardized testing evaluates a studentââ¬â¢s performance in one day, excluding any external factors. Many teachers are known to ââ¬Å"â⬠teach to the testâ⬠which can hinder a studentââ¬â¢s overall learning potentialâ⬠(Office of Work/Life Columbia University). There are many students who ââ¬Å"are smart and understand the content, but it doesnââ¬â¢t show on the test. Many students develop test anxiety which hinders performanceâ⬠(Office of Work/Life Columbia University). For federal funding, schools depend on their studentââ¬â¢s to perform well. ââ¬Å"Competition among schoolsâ⬠can sometimes take place (Office of Work/Life Columbia University). This could be a hard factor to overcome, when schools have exceptional and special education students. Special education include ââ¬Å"individual or small group instruction, curriculum or teaching modifications, assistive technology, transition services and other specialized services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapyâ⬠(CHADD: National Resource Center on ADHD). Students that are considered ââ¬Å"exceptionalâ⬠are required to take the same standardized test as student without learning restrictions, so how exactly is someone at a lower level given such high standards? The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004, was designed to ââ¬Å"ensure services to children with disabilities throughout the nationâ⬠(idea.ed.gov US Department of Education). This was designed to ensure that all student, ages 3-21, receive appropriate education regardless of any disability. In addition to this, theà disability they are diagnosed with must ââ¬Å"affect his or her educational performance and must need special education in order to receive an appropriate educationâ⬠(CHADD: National Resource Center on ADHD). ââ¬Å"Many children in exceptional childrenââ¬â¢s programs have physical, mental, or social disabilities. In North Carolina, these academically gifted children are classified as EC, because they have different educational needs than the average childâ⬠(Exceptional Children UNC School of Education). Since No Child Left Behind was passed, ââ¬Å"students with disabilities must be included in state testing and assessed against the same standard of proficiency as other students to determine whether schools are making the required ââ¬Å"adequate yearly progressâ⬠towards goals for academic proficiency. The regular assessment is given to students with special needs, and they are given appropriate accommodations. Appropriate accommodations include extra time to take the test, larger print, a quiet room, Braille, having the instructions repeated periodically, or more breaks than normally allowedâ⬠(Boehner 10). In addition to the special benefits granted, an Individualized Education Program, (IEP), is designed for each child with a disability. Students under this program have a customized ââ¬Å"learning planâ⬠on how they will be evaluated and not whether they will be evaluated. ââ¬Å"Results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as a Nationââ¬â¢s Report Card, standardized test, which is used and measured the same in all states, provide useful information on the achievement and progress of students with disabilities. The results from the Nationââ¬â¢s Report Card show progress, as well as gaps, between students with disabilities and nondisabled studentsâ⬠(Aron and Loprest 112-113).

Through the character of Ebenezer Scrooge; Dickens observes the social problems of the world within the novel A Christmas Carol. Dickens examines the social problems this world faces which some of us may have thought about from time to time, however none daring enough to comment on like Dickens have done. The social problems that Dickens lays out within his novel, A Christmas Carol though the character of Ebenezer Scrooge include: Christmas is just a time of a year where you are left poorer, without money you cannot be happy in life, and finally Observes that you should look after yourself and only yourself in life. Christmas is just a time of year where you are left poorer. This examination is shown within the novel A Christmas Carol, through the character of Ebenezer Scrooge. Ebenezer Scrooge stated ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in ââ¬â¢em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you?â⬠This is one way of thinking about Christmas, however Dickens also observed Christmas in a whole lighter sense through the character of Ebenezer Scroogeââ¬â¢s nephew Fred. Fred shared a whole different way of observing Christmas when he stated ââ¬Å"I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round ââ¬â apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that ââ¬â as a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.â⬠These are two very different and conflicting observations noticed and presented within A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Without money you cannot be happy. This analogy is presented once again through the character of Ebenezer Scrooge in his conflicting confrontation with his nephew Fred. After Ebenezer Scroogeââ¬â¢s nephew; Fred pushed his luck a bit too far with his ââ¬Å"merry Christmasâ⬠¦ God blessâ⬠speech, Ebenezer Scrooge brought out all his thoughts to the table stating mainly that you cannot surely be happy if you have no money. Ebenezer Scrooge has stated this when he mentioned `Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? what reason have you to be merry? Youââ¬â¢re poor enough.â⬠Or how about this following statement when Ebenezer Scrooge notes the following; ââ¬Å"Much good may it do you! Much good it has ever done you!â⬠(In other words stating that good only derives from profit and not happiness.) and finally the last quote ââ¬Å"My clerk, with fifteen shillings a week, and a wife and family, talking about a merry Christmas. Iââ¬â¢ll retire to Bedlam.à ¢â¬ This is one of Dickens examinations of the social problems within our world, presented through the character of Ebenezer Scrooge. You should look after yourself and only yourself in life, is the Last and final observation from Mr. Dickens on the topic concerning the social problems of his age in a Christmas Carol. Mr. Dickens makes this very clear through the Character of Ebenezer Scrooge in the novel A Christmas Carol through the confronting and some may be unpleasant comments. Scrooge states the following; ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t make merry myself at Christmas and I canââ¬â¢t afford to make idle people merry.â⬠Or ââ¬Å"If they would rather dieâ⬠¦.they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.â⬠And the final quote; ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not my business,â⬠Scrooge returned. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!â⬠Dickens has brought a vast variety of observations towards the topic, the social problems of his age in the novel A Christmas Carol. The majority of observations were presented through the character of Ebenezer Scrooge, however one examination was presented by Ebenezer Scroogeââ¬â¢s nephew called Fred. Reading About The Freedom Writers English Language Essay When someone thinks of freedom writers, they instantly think of the movie that was made in 2007. Most people dont even know that the movie was based on a true story. In the 1990s, a new schoolteacher by the name of Erin Gruwell decided that her curriculum needed to be changed. Erin wanted to inspire low-achieving students. Instead of teaching the students about subjects that they dont care about, she handed out journals and asked the students to write about their own lives and the struggles they have been through. Erin knew that all the students didnt like her and she wanted to not only be a teacher, but to be a friend to her students. Making a connection to her students was hard, but she knew that something would be able to get to them, and that was to connect her work to the lives of the students. Stories and plays such as Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet and Anne Frank were presented within the classroom. The students could relate to these stories because just like in Romeo and Julie t, there were gangs. In Anne Frank, there was racism and death. After reading about The Freedom Writers, to words that stand out to me are racism, gang violence and struggles during school and at home. At the time, education was strict because that was the only way to succeed in life. A quote that was stated by one of the writers says, Ive lost many friends, friends who have died in an undeclared war. By analyzing this quote, I feel as if this writer is talking about their experience with gang violence. Because of gang violence, most, if not all, of the writers have to have their guards up. They never know when a gun rampage might begin. Most of the writers were already in a gang because they had no choice. They didnt know what was right from wrong and even their families were in gangs. If they didnt have family, they would go into a gang and make a family. Being in a gang has affected teens way of learning while in school. Their focus is not on school work. Gangs also caused more racism during school. In most of the classrooms, the students were all separated into their racial groups. These groups affected the way the students felt because if they werent a certain type of race, then they werent allowed in. This made it hard for students to ask for help in classrooms because they were in a different group. After reading through the diaries, anyone can understand why and how the writers have overcome their obstacles. To succeed in life, they had to be more open minded and not judge people without knowing them. Its crazy to read the diaries and see how difficult it was to live in a life where you could only talk to people that were in your group, or judging people who I dont even know just because they are different. When someone thinks they have an awful life now, itd good to look back on how the lives of the writers were because it helps us realize that we actually do have a great life and we should be grateful for all of the opportunities we get to take. Being able to go to school, get an education and have friends of many racial groups is an honor. One of the most interesting stories that involved the Freedom Writers was The Diary of Anne Frank. This story was introduced to the writers in the classroom to help them realize that there is someone out there who has it just as bad as they do. Anne Frank had to deal with the Holocaust which was when Germany killed pretty much all of the Jews. Anne Frank fortunately made it out alive because Miep Gies helped hide Anne Frank. Miep Gies actually got out alive as well and was able to write about her experience in the Concentration Camps. The writers were so interested in this book that they just had to meet Miep Gies. They actually raised money and worked together and in the end, they get to meet Miep Gies. Her story touched the hearts of the students and that moment changed their lives forever. Statistics say that during this time, most if not all of the students did pass high school and even move on to college. They honestly didnt think that they would be able to pass because no one believed in them, until Mrs. Gruwell came to teach their classes. I dont blame the students either. Imagine being in a poor neighborhood where all around you are gangs and every night you cant sleep because you hear gun shots. Your family never graduated from school or maybe you have no family to look up to. How in the world could anyone believe in themselves when no one around them cared enough to help them? The Freedom Writers, in my opinion, is probably one of the greatest stories in human history. It not only tells people a little bit about the Holocaust and how it affected many people, but it also lets people know that there are people out there who are suffering and we dont even realize it. I know for certain that most people dont even go in a down town area because they know that there are trashy and poor people who live there. They dont even get the chance to let those types of people explain their story and how they ended up there. Most teens dont have the ability to get a good education like most upper classmen do. After reading about and even watching the movie about the Freedom Writers, it has shown me that people need to give other people a break and not judge anyone just by looking at them. Since the Freedom Writers actually happened, most of us are accepting people of other races and more people are getting educations. In our society, we cant get anywhere without an educati on. From personal experience, The Freedom Writers is actually an inspiring story for young people like me. This story is being read in classrooms all around the world still today. The journals that were written by the students in the classroom, was actually made into a book and is inspiring people all around the world to do better for themselves and for others. After the story of the Freedom Writers leaked out, a foundation called The Freedom Writers Foundation was formed. Its a non-profit organization that was created to inspire young, underprivileged students to pick up books instead of guns and knives. One of my favorite quotes from The Freedom Writers was, When you die, do you think its going to matter if you were a gangster? If you had swag? If you dressed a certain way? Youre dead and youre going to rot. And when you rot, no one is going to remember you because all you left behind in this world was something no one cares about. This quote was stated by Erin Gruwell and this quote should be said to every student thats in school. A lot of people act or dress a certain way to become popular or to stand out, but thats not going to get them anywhere in the world. No one cares how good you look in the real world; its how good you handle situations that are thrown at you. A Language shapes the way people perceive the world and it also helps to define culture of any society. Any language is a gift the knowledge of more than one language makes a man more efficient and skilful in many ways. It opens our minds and guides us into a magical world of fancies and dreams. To certain the proper learning of language helps us to develop ourselves, our minds, and also our personality. Human language is unique because it is a symbolic communication system that is learned instead of biologically inherited for some people. Functions of Language: The three important functions of a language are as follows: Informative function: The primary function of a language is to communicate any information. This function accepts or denies assumptions such as the scientific fact or the factual statements. This function helps us to state the logical facts clearly. Expressive Function: The secondary function of a language is to convey the feelings or emotions or attitudes of somebody. Earlier everyone is considered to be literate by their degrees and diplomas, but the knowledge of English language makes an individual literate in todays world. Moreover English language becomes a store house of social and political knowledge. The world of today needs English for some of the following reasons: Internet: Due to the rapid growth of Information Technology especially the world of internet, English Language rules users of Internet. We cannot be effective in the internet world without the English Language. It has also become the official language of the internet. The advent of online universities has now made it possible for everyone to learn English. Everyone gets access to the features of internet even across the countries. The Internet has opened up new career opportunities for every citizen of the world outside their respective countries. Internet has also plays a vital to promote and to spread the English language throughout the globe and more and more people are exposed to the English language and the English has become also the language of the internet as well. Education: The field of education has amplified the function of English Language. Most of the educational resources, materials and books are in English. The global educational systems in the universities around the world have the requirement of English Language. In order to communicate successfully, one needs a language that is commonly understood by most of the people in the speech community. For many years, English has become the common language globally understood and appreciated by nearly everyone. In other words English becomes an effective instrument to communicate with everyone around the world. Information technology uses this ability of English to function well in the field of communication by internet and emails. Travel: English is spoken around the globe next to Mandarin Chinese. It has been stated that out of the nearly six billion people living in the world today around three hundred and fifty million do speak English. It has become the International Business Language. Many countries around the world make use of English Language for the governance. The relationship among the countries around the world is enhanced by the effective communication in English. Language differs from nation to nation. When we travel around the globe, the English Language becomes the rescue factor to communicate with everyone. Business: English language has been the language of business in todays electronic world. A good number of companies have ventured into sending the production to overseas in order to cut down their costs. In other words, the companies around the world are in to outsourcing and off-shoring business. In order to communicate with the business people of other countries, English Language becomes the effective tool. It is the trading language of the world to a certain extend. A sound knowledge of English Language makes an individual to be a successful business man around the world. 1.1.3 English Language in India When the British started ruling India, they searched for educated Indian mediators who could help them to administer India. The British Government turned to high caste Indians to work for them. Many high caste Indians, especially the Brahmans and the other people of high caste worked for them. The British policy was to create an Indian class who should think like the British. It was said then in England Indians in blood and color but English in taste, in opinions and morals and intellect. The English also instituted in India universities based on English models with emphasis on English. These Indians also obtained their education in British universities. The English Christian missionaries arrived in India from 1813 and they also established schools at primary level for Indians in which the language of instruction was local language and also they taught English. After that the missionaries established high schools with English as the language of instruction which gratified the Indians who wanted to study to have a sound knowledge of English Language. The British rulers started building their universities in India from 1857. English turned to be the first language in Indian education. The modern leaders of that age in India also substantiated English language and stated it to be the main mean towards victory. Indians who knew good English were considered as the new elite of India. Many new schools were set up in which the language of instruction was English. According to the British government laws the language of instruction at university level was English and therefore schools that stressed English were chosen by ambitious Indians. Even after the independence of India, English continued to be the foremost language of India. Officially English language was given a status of an assistant language and was supposed to cease officially after 15 years of Indias independence, but it still continues to be the significant language of India. Even today the schools in India that give importance to English are considered better schools and the same is the case at university levels, even though there is a tendency towards Indianization. For a good number of students, English is their first language and it is easier for them to communicate, read and write in English than in Indian languages, including their mother tongues. In the 1970s and 1980s about one third of the Indian schools emphasized English as their first language. We do have many Indians becoming more and more famous in the English Language and in the English Literature. They have also won a good number of International awards for their knowledge and the mastery in English. One most famous among them is Arundati Roy, who won the prestigious Booker Prize for her novel The God of small things. English has become the language of the latest business management in the world and Indian proficiency in English has brought glory to many Indian business managers. English is a means not only for international commerce; it has become increasingly essential for inter-state commerce and communication. 1.1.4. First year college students and their standard of English: The first year college students of India especially of Tamilnadu come from different medium of higher secondary such as English, Angelo Indian, Tamil, State Board, CBSE and other vernacular medium. Invariably the standard of the English of these students vary significantly. Most of them jump into the college life suddenly without having sufficient knowledge of English language. Though there have been English as a subject in the educational system for nearly ten years in the school life, their knowledge of English is very poor and insufficient. They do struggle in many ways to cope up with the College studies and they are disappointed. Many of them feel inferior and also do not put any effort to improve their standard of English language. Only very few of them come out of their nest and shed their tears to learn and to improve English. The causes for this condition of the students vary from individual to individual. Every student with insufficient knowledge of English so many things t o share about it. Hence this study about the first year college going to students of Tamilnadu with a special reference to their standard of English, attempts to explore the hidden and unsolved problems in a significant manner. 1.1.5 Reasons for choosing this topic for my research? After interacting and relating with the first college students all over Tamilnadu, I do feel and understand the struggles they undergo with regard English Language. Most of the subjects are in English and also the medium of instruction is English. They become inferior and also they do not find the way to improve their standard of English in order to cope up with the new academic life. Everyone is faced with difficult obstacles at some point in his or her life, whether or not they are able to overcome them can define them as a person. Every story has a plot, but a plot is determined by the characters and their actions to events that take place in the story. According to the article ââ¬Å"Science Fiction Images of Computers and Robotsâ⬠written by Patricia S. Warrick, many of the plots in Asimovââ¬â¢s novels depend on ââ¬Å"computers and robots [along with] space exploration and developmentâ⬠(54). Characters in the novels written by Isaac Asimov have to figure out the capabilities of new technology, understand other characters, and find solutions to problems with no end in sight. Charactersââ¬â¢ actions and responses to problems play large roles in the plot of a story. The characters in Asimovââ¬â¢s novels have to solve problems that could affect the future of humankind. With such great advancements in technology, the humans begin to worry tha t technology such as robots will take over and become the primary race. In Isaac Asimovââ¬â¢s novel, Foundation and Empire, one of the themes is deception and some characters use deception to get what they want, and in a world of power, they became the most powerful of all. Biography of William Edward Burghardt DuBois William Edward Burghardt DuBois, to his admirers, was by spirited devotion and scholarly dedication, an attacker of injustice and a defender of freedom. A harbinger of Black nationalism and Pan-Africanism, he died in self-imposed exile in his home away from home with his ancestors of a glorious pastââ¬âAfrica. Labeled as a "radical," he was ignored by those who hoped that his massive contributions would be buried along side of him. But, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, "history cannot ignore W.E.B. DuBois because history has to reflect truth and Dr. DuBois was a tireless explorer and a gifted discoverer of social truths. His singular greatness lay in his quest for truth about his own people. There were very few scholars who concerned themselves with honest study of the black man and he sought to fill this immense void. The degree to which he succeeded disclosed the great dimensions of the man." His Formative Years W.E.B. DuBois was born on February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. At that time Great Barrington had perhaps 25, but not more than 50, Black people out of a population of about 5,000. Consequently, there were little signs of overt racism there. Nevertheless, its venom was distributed through a constant barrage of suggestive innuendoes and vindictive attitudes of its residents. This mutated the personality of young William from good natured and outgoing to sullen and withdrawn. This was later reinforced and strengthened by inner withdrawals in the face of real discriminations. His demeanor of introspection haunted him throughout his life. While in high school DuBois showed a keen concern for the development of his race. At age fifteen he became the local correspondent for the New York Globe. And in this position he conceived it his duty to push his race forward by lectures and editorials reflecting upon the need of Black people to politicized themselves. DuBois was naturally gifted intellectually and took pleasurable pride in surpassing his fellow students in academic and other pursuits. Upon graduation from high school, he, like many other New England students of his caliber, desired to attend Harvard. However, he lacked the financial resources to go to that institution. But with the aid of friends and family, and a scholarship he received to Fisk College (now University), he eagerly headed to Nashville, Tennessee to further his education. This was DuBois' first trip south. And in those three years at Fisk (1885ââ¬â1888) his knowledge of the race problem became more definite.

Marks and Spencer
Abstract Currently, the retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) is not only well-recognized among the UK citizens, although its branches are well established across the globe with many product categories available. During recent years, it has been found that the sales growth of Marks and Spencerââ¬â¢s merchandising, which has been its oldest and most important sector, has been in decline while the growth of M&Sââ¬â¢s food sector has increased at an impressive pace. This study will attempt to find the factors responsible for the declining sales in clothing and the rising growth in food of Marks and Spencer, and hope to shed some lights on which areas the company should focus on to fix this decline in sales. The method will rely on the literature reviews of article from credible sources as well as published books. The paper will be analysed in two sections: factors affecting a sales slump in clothing, and factors affecting the rapid sales growth in the food department. 1. Introduction Established in 1884, Marks and Spencer has grown from a single-market company to a multinational corporation that has many branches around the world, including in England, the United States, and Thailand (www.marksandspencer.com, 2014). Not only has the 130-year-old corporation expanded across the globe, but it has also increased its product diversity as well. As of late 2013, the sale of food accounted for more in the total sales of clothes, with 55 percent against 45 percent respectively (Ruddick, 2013). For the clothing department, this event could be classified as relative product failure (Dibb et al., 2006). Though one may argue that the drop in sales might be an industry trend for that year, Primark was found to receive a 5 percent like-for-like increase in sales during this time (Ruddick, 2013). Therefore, marketing problems in M&Sââ¬â¢s clothing department have emerged as an interesting research topic. This report will discuss several marketing factors that could account for the widening sales gap between Mark and Spencerââ¬â¢s food and clothing divisions, focusing primarily on the UK. The study is divided into two discussions of the factors affecting the sales slump in clothing and will discuss the factors affecting the rapid growth in sales for the food department. Elements analysed in this paper include marketing variables, such as: target markets and customer profiles, price, quality and product positioning. Inequality in Education Essay
Inequality is an unequal rewards or opportunities for different individuals within a group or groups within a society. Education is recognised as major social institution. However, inequality in education is linked to major problems in society. In education a key factor that influences a childââ¬â¢s performance at school is social class. By going through Marxist and Functionalist perspectives, explanations for such inequalities can be understood. Difference in social background results in differences in achievement within an academic field. The level of achievement of the middle class is hugely different from that of the working class. Students success depends on parents income and parental choice. In other words the higher the social class of the parents, the more successful a child is likely to become in education. Children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to have low academic status than the students from higher socio-economic backgrounds. The education system remains socially selective, the higher the social class of the parents, the better the education of the children. Educational inequality starts young for children of disadvantaged class and they struggle to keep up throughout their school years. Children of lower socio-economic background at age 3 are one year behind the national average. By the time they are 14, they are two years behind. We can see this figure is staggering and extremely worrying. As a result, these children are less likely to go into higher education and more likely to be categorised into a lower academic ability. The functionalist perspective on education is concerned with the functions or role of education for society as a whole. It focuses on its contribution in maintaining social stability through development of social harmony. It believe in building bridges between values and passing culture and norms through education. Functionalist views education as the basic needs for aà society in order to survive. Particularly, functionalist sees education providing a trained and qualified labour force and its effective role selection and allocation in a meritocratic society. The Marxist perspective on education highlights the way education system reproduces existing social class inequalities and how it is carried out to the next generations. Marxist argues that the values passed on by school are those of ruling class. In contrary to functionalism Marxist does not believe education system is neutral filter and grade according to meritocracy. Instead it believes social class and other factors influence success and failure in education. Marxist approach argues that there is no equality of opportunity in education, education rather covers the fact that the social class influences educational success and there is inequality Inequality in education can put individuals of the groups that are affected by these at a disadvantage in the future. Inequality in education gap will remain because even though we are aware of it we have learnt to tolerate it.The education system reproduces existing social class inequalities, and passes them from one generation to the next. High Museum Project
I chose to do my review project in ââ¬Å"The High Museumâ⬠, in Atlanta GA. It was found in 1905 and its very first name was Atlanta Art Association. Also it is the one of the most visited art museum in the world. While, visiting High museum, I was drawn to two particular pieces from two very different artists. The Chest and drawers by Teyo Remy, gained my attention because of creative design and deep meaning. My other favorite piece is ââ¬Å"The beginning of Life in the Yellow Jungleâ⬠, by Thorton Dial. I will be comparing two artist from Modern and Contemporary Art period.Teyo Remy was part of a group of young Dutch designers who came to the forefront of the international design scene with works that had a political awareness and also sense of humor. Chest and drawers piece was design in 1991, which was based on twenty drawers which each of those had a story with them. Very first drawer represents a jewelry box that was a gift to the young woman from the father. The enti re piece is held together by a furniture mowers strap that represents nature of life. Basically a strap would be a reference of us humans holding on the important things in life that matter to us.The reason I like this is because it connects to me with memories of my past and experiences I went through. To me, each drawer represents a memory in my life that has thought me to make better decisions in the future. I also like this design of art because it is amazes me how Teyo Remy managed to make a design that held twenty drawers together and none of them fell off. The color selections of the drawers are matte and plain colored that you see in your everyday life. This was a good selection because it made the piece more relatable. ââ¬Å"You Canââ¬â¢t Lay Down Your Memoryâ⬠, is a perfect title for this design as it shows the importance of past.Thorton Dial was born in 1928, Emelle, Alabama. He endured a life of poverty and hard labor. This self-taught artist has made astonishin g master pieces that represent history, politics, and power. He overcame many obstacles such as being illiterate, coming from poverty, and he also had a late start as an artist in his fifties. One of his famous pieces is ââ¬Å"The Beginning of Life in the Yellow Jungleâ⬠, designed in 2003. Some of the materials he used for that particular design are plastic soda bottles, doll, clothing, bedding, wire, found metal, and rubber glove.Yellow color represent coming together of all ââ¬Å"racesâ⬠and working with each other in peace. Plastic soda bottles represent a new born that is innocent and pure in this world of chaos. The reason I chose this artwork is because initially it looked very disturbing, distorted, and mysterious. After a few minutes of looking at it, it began to speak to me. I begin to realize what Dial was trying say. To me this art represents a brighter side of the future. Through many lifeââ¬â¢s struggles and hardships I endured, there seems to always be a greater hope for better life.I also believe that this represent the beauty in struggles we encounter in our lives. In comparison, these two artists are very different but yet share a similar view on life. They come from very different backgrounds but these two particular pieces have an underlined connection. Dial basis his work on his experiences which are captured in his memory. He is able to express his views, struggles, and experiences from his past. On the other hand, Remyââ¬â¢s chest of drawers represents each of his memory in a tight space of drawers. And also, memories can be used as a stepping stone in a pathway to a greater life.
